Kayven felt tears welling up in his eyes so he squeezed his eyes shut and buried his head into Xander's chest, trying not to cry.

Xander purred and licked at Kayven's ears soothingly, watching his friend before he looked up to check where Noelle was. Finding her safe and close by, he returned his attention to his stripey friend, "You really thought I'd just abandon you? I came back here just to find out if you'd stayed."
Noelle wandered past Kayven and lay down next to Xander, curling up with his tail around her.

"W-Well you met your mate and I thought...I thought I'd give you some space," Kayven said tearfully, his voice watery, "I wanted to be a good friend to you so I didn't follow and I waited a long time. I stayed, hoping you'd come back, but I didn't know if you would. I've been alone most of my life anyway so..."

Xander rubbed his head against Kayven's, his chest rumbled as he purred and licked at the stripey male's ears and forehead, "Kayven... You are a good friend, and I'm glad you waited, I was always going to come back for you. I would never abandon you for a random female."
He glanced at Noelle for a moment, but she was asleep and couldn't hear him, so he curled his tail close around her and licked at Kayven's ears again, "There's still so much you haven't learned yet..."

Kayven nodded silently and licked Xander's chin in return, relieved that his friend, his big brother, had returned and was going to stay.
"I-I'll help keep an eye on Noelle too," he said, "I won't be another child you'll need to watch over."

Xander smiled warmly and continued to purr softly, "Alright, you can help. That's why I didn't approach you sooner, I need to make sure you two could get along first. ...There's still a lot I need to teach you."
Noelle curled up into a little ball in her sleep, leaning against her father's tail while her own wrapped around to cover her face.

"Like what?" Kayven asked, slightly curious as he stayed pressed against Xander. He saw Noelle sleeping and lay his tail gently on the baby girl's back, his tail acting like a blanket for her.

"Grown up things, for when you're older... Like, you thought I would stay with Ruby permanently, but we parted ways not long after Noelle was born. I might see her again, yes, but we don't need to stay together, and I could just as easy end up going after another female next time," Xander explained patiently, he smiled as he watched what Kayven was doing.
Noelle remained asleep, her nose twitched at the new smell so close to her.

Xander pressed his nose to Kayven's forehead reassuringly, "It's not sad, we could've stayed together if we'd wanted to. This way, we get to live our lives the way we always have, and Noelle will still be safe and healthy until she wants more freedom."
Noelle stirred slightly, one of her paws holding on to Kayven's tail, then she was fast asleep again.

"...Alright," Kayven said, cuddling against Xander. He looked down at Noelle holding his tail and smiled softly.
"She really is a sweet little girl," he said kindly.

Xander smiled and purred as he watched them both fondly, "Yeah, she is. She's a lot like her mother, and not just in appearance, my little christmas angel."
His ears twitched faintly as he briefly looked around thoughtfully, "We should move, it's too open for her to sleep here."
Noelle sighed softly in her sleep.

Kayven nodded and gently grabbed Noelle by the soft scruff of her neck, holding her carefully with his mouth. If her mother wasn't here, then he would play the part of the mother for her. He would protect this little one, Xander's angel.

Xander watched Kayven for a moment, then smiled again before turning to look around. He jumped up on an old nearby log for a better view, examining their surroundings closely as his ears twitched alertly.
Noelle stirred again, having not expected anyone to lift her. Her tail swished idly as she started to wake up a little.

Kayven gave Xander a questioning look, silently asking if the other Knopfleri saw a safe place to stay. He could feel Noelle beginning to wake up.
