Kayven was quiet, weighing his options, and then he shifted back inside the den a bit, still protecting the entrance but no longer sitting outside in the elements.
"Is Noelle alright?" he asked, keeping his eyes trained to the outside of the den.

Xander observed Kayven with mild amusement before he glanced at Noelle to check on her, "She's fine, Kayven."
He was quiet for a moment, sorting through his thoughts as he looked at his friend, "How've you been?"
Noelle snuggled as close as possible, wiping a paw over her face in her sleep.

"...Times have been hard and lonely without you," Kayven said truthfully, "I've survived though, thanks to what you taught me. I don't trust easy anymore. I almost didn't come cross the lake when I saw Noelle, but I did because..."
He trailed off.

"Because...?" Xander prompted, watching Kayven with a concerned sense of sadness.
Noelle remained asleep, one of her ears sticking out at an odd angle.

"I saw Noelle's tail sticking out of the grass," Kayven said quietly, "I knew it wasn't you, her tail was to small, but I hoped...I couldn't stop myself from hoping. I'm sorry, I know I sound pathetic."

Xander got up carefully, making sure he didn't disturb Noelle, and walked over to sit as near as he could to Kayven. He pressed his nose to the other Knopfleri's back and purred softly.
Noelle simply rolled over onto the warm space her father had left.

Kayven wrapped his tail around Xander and curled into his warmth, taking a moment to enjoy the fact that his friend was back with him.
"I think...I think I might love you, Xander," he whispered, "I know that sounds weird but I...I don't think I'm like other Knopfleri. I want to stay together with you and it hurt so much when you went away...I didn't think it would hurt so bad."

Xander continued to purr while Kayven curled into him, his ears twitched as he listened intently. He took deep breathes to try relax the other male, and licked at his friend's back again, "You remember the last time we had a conversation like this one? You thought there was something wrong with you that time, too."
Noelle remained asleep.

Kayven nodded.
"Yes, and then Mirage came," he whispered, "She's gone now, moved off to find her own den, but I don't feel the hurt for her like I did for you. She was beautiful but I don't know, she wasn't for me. Maybe somewhere out there is a female for me but, if Mirage is anything to go by... I like you more, Xander. I'm sorry."

"You don't need to be sorry, Kayven," Xander replied gently, still breathing deeply to try reassure the stripey male, "Some males don't feel the same about females the way that other males do, it's just one of those things that happen sometimes. If you find a female one day, thats great, if you don't, that's fine too."
He leaned against Kayven to offer comfort, "You're welcome to stay with me, if that's what you want."
Noelle hugged her tail in her sleep.

Kayven curled more into Xander, feeling small and safe next to the bigger male.
"I do," he said, "I want to stay with you and Noelle and any other children you may have. I want to stay for a long, long time. I still...like females, I think, but...what do they call that, when you like both males and females?"

"I don't know, I've never really been concerned with the names of things," Xander answered as he watched Kayven, "and you can stay as long as you like, but how can you be sure you like males ...in that sense, other than you missed me, ...did something happen while I was away?"
Noelle remained fast asleep.

Kayven's ears drooped and he grew quiet for a moment.
"There...There was a bird," he said, "He wasn't from around here and I was lonely, so I talked to him. We got to talking and I told him how much I missed you, how I felt when you had been mock aggressive to me and how I had um...reacted to it. We talked about Mirage to and the bird said that maybe I was stuck in the middle. He said I was a submissive boy and that I would like someone who was the dominate to my submissive, like yin and yang."

Xander blinked for a moment after Kayven was done talking, that must have been some interesting bird. He licked at the stripey male's ears and purred lightly, "It's certainly an interesting thought, but it doesn't really prove anything. Only you know how you feel, Kayven. Tell me honestly, would you be okay with it if a male took that sort of interest in you?"
Like most babies, Noelle was a very sound sleeper who slept a lot.

"...I don't know," Kayven said truthfully, leaning gently into Xander's attentions, "I suppose if he was nice to me. If he liked me or needed me then...yeah, I could see being alright with it."
He looked back at Noelle to make sure she was okay and when he saw that she was he cuddled against Xander.
