Circling around to examine Kayven's claw marks, Xander chuckled softly. "You did good, that's how it's supposed to turn out. My claws are just shorter because I use them a lot, so the marks turn out differently."
He hopped up on one of the trees roots and sat there, wrapping his tail around his feet. "Now, if you ever pass this tree again, you'll know you've been here - and depending on how strong your scent is, you'll know how long ago it was too. It's a good idea to leave a mark anytime you stop anywhere for a while, or if it's a good place to find food or shelter."

Kayven nodded, listening closely to his new friend and adviser. His tail swayed happily when Xander told him he had done a good job and he nodded to what the other Knopfleri said. It all was sound advice, at least in Kayven's opinion.
"Is the lake we're headed to a good place?" he asked eagerly.

"Yeah! Ponds and lakes usually are good places. It's what the humans would call ...what was it? Ah, our 'natural enviroment', or something. Most Knopfleri are born in places like that." Xander explained, smiling at how happy Keyven seemed. He paused briefly to groom one of his front legs in preparation for the splashing around he knew he'd be doing later, his ears twitching at the slightest sound. "It's a lot of fun, and there's plenty of good things there."

Kayven's ears perked and he squirmed lightly in excitement. The lake sounded so nice and he had never seen one before. The closest he had ever come was the kiddie pool the handlers gave him on hot days. He'd like to sit and soak in the water, rolling over and over and-!
"Let's go then," he said excitedly, "Please? How far is it? How big is it? Are there other Knopfleris there?"

Xander laughed happily, standing up and jumping back down to the ground, his tail waving out behind him. He was pleased Keyven was excited.
"Sure, we can go now. It shouldn't be too far, and it's a good size lake but there are a few bigger ones further out," he started to walk toward the undergrowth, looking back to tap his stripey friend with his tail to make sure he was following. "There could be other Knopfleres there, I haven't visited this lake in a while though, so I can't say for sure."

Kayven smiled and followed closely, making sure not to stray to far from Xander. His excitement was helping to dull the pain in his paws and legs and he was almost hopping, he felt so happy. He was so glad he had found Xander.
"Do you think," he said a little more quietly, "There might be any...girls there?"
He blushed shyly under his grey and sunset fur.

"So that's what you're so excited about, " Xander replied, glancing back at Keyven with a kind and slightly teasing smile as he ducked under yet another branch. "Sure, there might be some females about, if you're lucky."

"N-No," Kayven stuttered, embarrassed and flustered, "No I mean, it would be nice if there were some, girls, you know, but I've never even seen one my own age before and oh gosh! What would I say anyway? I'm not...no never mind. We can forget the girls, let's just see the lake. Yeah, that sounds right. First the lake then...well we'll go from there.... Um...Xander have you ever done...you know?"
Kayven blushed some more and slunk down so far he was almost crawling on his belly.
"That was inappropriate, I'm sorry," he said.

Xander laughed, amused and unfazed by the conversation. "Relax, nothing wrong with a little curiousity, you were gonna have questions eventually. If there are any girls at the lake, I'll help you out. We'll still do some exploring anyway."
His tail brushed against Kayven to reassure him everything was fine. "And to answer your question, ...I've no plans on having kids any time soon."
He hopped through a gap between two trees, pausing briefly on the other side to wait for his stripey companion.

Kayven picked himself off the ground and hopped through the gap as well. He brushed warmly against Xander in thanks and sniffed the air, his ears lifted. His ears twitched for a moment.
"Do you hear something?" he asked.

"What is it you hear?" Xander asked, his own ears sticking upright in alert as he examined their surroundings. He hopped up on a rock for a better vantage point.

"Mm, I don't know," Kayven said, confused as he tilted his ears, "It sounds like a...rock slide! Run, Xander, RUN!"
Kayven hopped up onto the rock and nudged Xander with his head roughly, panicking. His tail was lashing back and forth in horror and he could here the rocks or whatever they were bouncing down the nearby mountain side towards them.

Xander turned quickly, trying to herd Zayven off of the rock and toward an area where the trees where thicker. He was healthy and naturally athletic and could run like lightning when he had to, but he had to get his friend moving first.
Leaping down from the rock, he hit the ground running, zig-zaging and hopping obsticals. He glanced back to make sure the stripey male was following.

Kayven ran, trying his best to stay close to Xander. His eyes were wide with fear as he dashed after his friend. Rocks were crashing into the dirt all around them and Kayven's paws began to sting in opposition to him running again so soon.
He was to panicked to feel it. He simply ran.

Dashing through a thorn bush, eyes narrowed to avoid injury, Xander hopped nimbly over tree roots and rocks. His tail held out to try keep track of Kayven, he darted to one side as he located a hill that might offer some safety. "This way!"
If he was right, the hill should have an old burrow on it somewhere that they could hide in. Promblem was a lot of these hills looked the same, and there was no time to slow down to check scents, not that he could with the rocks kicking up so much dust and dirt.
