Xander lightly rested his head on Kayven but stayed awake, continuing to stand watch. His ears turned and twitched at every little noise.

(^^ I'm going to put in a bit of a time jump here, just a little one.)
A few hours passed and Kayven's ears twitched. He yawned and raised his head, looking around sleepily. He saw that Xander was still awake and that the sun had yet to rise. He wasn't sure when it had set but it didn't really matter.
"G-Go to sleep, Xander," he yawned, "I'll stand watch."

Xander's ears twitched as he lifted his head to look at Kayven. He was sort of tired, but he was reluctant to sleep. He hadn't had time earlier to check out the surrounding area to make sure this was a safe burrow, and the creatures of the night were usually worse than the daytime ones. "You don't have to, I can stay awake."
He pressed his nose against his stripey friend to assure him everything was fine.

Kayven pressed against Xander warmly and licked his the soft shell of his friend's ear.
"You won't be any good tomorrow if you don't sleep," he whispered kindly, "Rest for me then if you won't sleep. I'm awake enough, I can do it. Don't you trust me?"

Looking at the burrow's entrace indecisively, Xander sighed softly and settled down as though he might sleep. "It's not that I don't trust you, I just don't want you to be alone if any unfriendly nocuturnal creatures show up."
He rested his head on his paws, still watching the entrance warily though his eyes had half closed. His tail shifted until it felt comfortable.

"I won't be alone, you'll be here," Kayven said innocently, "If it makes you feel better I'll stay right here and wake you up if anything bad happens."

Xander's gaze moved to rest on Kayven for a moment before he gave a small smile. "Alright, alright. But you wake me soon as you think something's wrong, got it?"
He curled round into a loose half circle, his tail covering his nose as his ears continued to twitch for sound, his eyes still slightly open.

"I promise," Kayven said softly. He cuddled up to Xander for good measure and kept a sharp eye on the mouth of the den, waiting quietly and listening.

Watching his surroundings for a moment longer, Xander slowly and still somewhat reluctantly fell asleep. He felt Kayven cuddle up to him, so he rubbed his forehead against him before settling down again. His ears continued to twitch for a while.

Kayven smiled and nuzzled Xander back before resuming his watch. His tail swayed gently and as he watched the burrow's open mouth he thought about how lucky and happy he felt. Sure he had been left behind by the zoo, been chased by an angry farmer's wife and almost crushed by falling boulders, but finding Xander had made up for all that.
He smiled.
Maybe when they got to the lake Xander could teach him how to swim. Not in the shallow kiddie part but the deep end, where the cool, clean water went on and on.
His stomach growled. But, first thing in the morning he was going to find some fruit or nuts or something. The carrot had been big but not enough.
Kayven's ears twitched and his tail flip-flopped as he watched and waited for the sun.

Xander was deep asleep, it had been a fairly eventful day after all. His ears still twitched faintly every now and then.

Eventually the dawn came, warm and inviting and Kayven yawned. He had never kept watch before and staying awake had left him more tired then usual. His ears felt heavy and he kept wanting to close his eyes. However, he had promised Xander so he shook himself awake and yawned again.

Ears twitching at a faint noise, Xander stirred, stretching out around Kayven, his tail flicked vaguely. After another minute or two, he half opened one eye to look around, his gaze rested on his stripey friend.
"You can rest now, I'm awake," he murmured, sleepily.

Kayven yawned again.
"It's alright, it's dawn anyhow," he said sleepily, scratching behind his ear with his back foot, "We should get moving."
He shook himself, nuzzled Xander warmly and stood.

Xander raised his head, briefly groomed his front paws, then stood up and stretched, his tail swishing around. He brushed against Kayven as he stepped past him and sniffed around the burrow entrance, cautiously peering outside, ears twitching for sound.
He looked back, "Let's go then."
