Kayven nodded and followed, a light hop in his step. He was still a little tired but the thought of the lake excited him and gave him some energy. His tail swayed happily as he followed Xander out of the burrow.

Hopping up onto the rock that had almost crushed him the day before, Xander looked around, sniffing the air. His ears twitched as he examined the surroundings, and his tail swished thoughtfully.
"You hungry?" he asked, glancing to Kayven. He was used to having broken sleep patterns and was bright eyed and fully awake already, eager to get started with his day.

Kayven nodded and his stomach took that moment to voice its own opinion. The small Knopfleri blush gently under his fur and looked down, absently pushing a small pebble with his paw.
"W-Where should we look?" he asked shyly, because heaven help him, he did not want to go back to the farm.

Xander chuckled and turned his attention back to sniffing the breeze, judging by the smell there should be some berries growing on some of the bushes that were scattered about the hillside.
"You like berries? There should be some around here," he explained, his eyes still searching for other potential food sources.

Kayven's ears perked happily.
"Yes, oh yes," he said enthusiastically, squiggling in excitement. At the zoo, berries were a rare treat and the thought of getting some almost made Kayven sit up and beg.

Smiling at Kayven's reaction, Xander hopped down from the rock and began to lead the way toward the nearest bushes. He looked back to make sure his stripey friend was following, "Come on, then."
His tail swished as he sniffed at random objects while he walked.

Kayven followed happily, keeping close to Xander. His ears twitched this way and that and then he stopped and turned around. Before they completely left the area of the den, Kayven went to a tree, sniffed all around it and then scratched at the tree with his long claws, marking the bark.
He then trotted back to Xander's side, pleased with himself for remembering.

Xander watched to see what Kayven was doing, then smiled, happy to see he remembered.
"Well done," he praised, his tail waved out behind him as he waited for his stripey friend to catch up. He picked up the pace a bit, following his nose to pick out which of the nearest bushes had berries.
Having singled one out, he loped towards it to investigate.

Kayven smiled happily, excited about the praise and then ran with Xander towards the bush. The scent of the sweet, tangy berries tickled his nose and his tail wiggled enthusiastically at the thought of them. He stuck close to Xander's shoulder though, just in case the bush belong to someone else.

Pausing a short distance from the bush, Xander sniffed at it cautiously, then ran circles around it to make sure nothing was waiting to jump out at them. Finding nothing he walked back to Kayven and quickly stole a berry from the bush. Still nothing happened, so he ate the berry and moved closer to find more.
He glanced back at his friend to show him it was fine.

Kayven approached, sniffing the bush as well. He stuck his head under the leaves and sniffed at the bushes' trunk.
"It hasn't been claimed," his voice said from the bush, and then he looked up and saw a bunch of red delicious berries right above his head. He grabbed the bundle and pulled it out of the bush, placing it by Xander's feet so they could share. He took a berry and ate it, sighing in bliss.

Xander smiled kindly at Kayven but didn't take any of his berries, instead he hopped into the air and snapped at some berries that were higher in the bush. He landed on his hind legs and lowered himself back down onto all fours, pulling his head back since the berries hadn't broke free of the bush yet. This led to a few minutes of playful tug-of-war, which Xander then won.
His tail whipped the air energetically as he dropped his prize on the ground, and sat down next to Kayven, nibbling at his own bunch.
"It's good that you checked," he said after a moment, "you should know that, sometimes, only sometimes, you might need to take something that's already been claimed. But only if there's no other options, and if it's another male that you have to take from, try to make sure that it's one you can dominate. "

Kayven had watched in awe as Xander retrieved the berries. He ate some of his own berries as he listened to Xander and then his ears drooped when he heard the word 'dominate.'
"H-How do I do that?" Kayven asked, "Dominate, that is."

Having been eating another berry, Xander paused and looked and Kayven with mild puzzlement. He hadn't realised his stripey friend wouldn't know something as basic as dominance.
"Well," he said thoughtfully after thinking about it for a bit, "there are different ways, depending on circumstances. There's intimidation, where you sort of scare them into backing off. A lot of the time it comes down to fighting, which I'm assuming you know how to do? And there's... another way, which I also hope you know how to do, but that's sort of personal."

Kayven listened and nodded.
"I understand," he said, "I don't...I don't think I'd be good at fighting. I've never had to do it before and as for the other type..."
He blushed, his mind going into the instinctual gutter before he could stop it.
"I think I know what you mean, I think...I think I'll stick to the intimidation if I can help it," he said, then he hopped excitedly for a moment, "Here, l-let me try for a second. Tell me what you think okay?"
Giving a mock angry glare that looked more like a pout, Kayven backed up and puffed himself up. All his orange and gray striped fur stood on end so he looked twice as big. Of course, he also looked like a fluffy striped cotton ball and the fact that his tail was swaying happily from side to side didn't help.
"How do I look?" he asked in a strained voice, trying to keep himself looking big.
