Xander watched Kayven with amused interest. It bothered him slightly that his stripey friend was limited to intimidation, but he'd try to help make the grey and orange Knopfleri as intimidating as possible, he could always attempt to teach the other stuff later if need be.
He sat up, calmly examining the other male, "It's a good first try, you've got the right idea. Hold your tail up, though, if it's size you're going for."

Kayven raised his tail up ramrod straight.
"Like this?" he asked, trying to stay big. If he couldn't/didn't want to fight he knew he'd have to bluff his way out of a fight. He was just glad that Xander hadn't been one of those 'dominating' males. He'd still be running scared if he hadn't found Xander.
Eventually Kayven ran out of steam and he deflated like a balloon without the noise. Disappointed, he licked his fur down and ate a few more berries, trying to regain his lost energy. The problem with staying big was like trying to stay mad. It made you all hot and agitated inside and wore you out quickly.
He sighed.

Xander smiled kindly, brushing against Kayven in reassurance, "Don't worry, it just takes practice. You're off to a good start, I'm sure you'll get the hang of it soon enough."
He briefly licked at the back of his friend's ears, then took a few steps to one side, "Here, let me show you how I do it."
Arching his back as his fur bristled, Xander held his tail high like a scorpion, occassionally lashing it around angrily. He moved as though about to pounce, baring his fangs and glaring at nothing just off to one side of the stripey Knofleri.
While he was usually a laidback guy, the brown and green male was indeed the dominating sort, never backing down if he could help it. But he had never felt any need to show Kayven who was boss, and as long as there was never a direct challenge, it wouldn't really bother him.

Kayven saw Xander look so frightening and tripped over his own feet. The other knopfleri wasn't looking directly at him and yet Kayven's instincts were screaming at him to cower and so he did. With his tail between his legs and his ears pressed meekly down he flattened himself to the ground to protect his belly and let out a wordless whimper, shivering.

Noting Kayven's reaction, Xander relaxed his pose and walked over to stand next to him. He pressed his nose to the grey Knofleri's forehead and licked at his ears, trying to comfort him.
"Calm down, it's alright," he murmered, resting one of his front paws on his friend's stripey back and sweeping his tail around behind them both.

Kayven continued to shiver a bit but now the Xander didn't look so frightening he began to calm down.
"I-I'm sorry," he stuttered, "I don't know what came over me. I was so scared, I'm sorry."
He knew better then to ask Xander never to do that again, because the other Knopfleri would have to do it again if danger threatened them. So instead he rubbed against Xander, asking for forgiveness.

Xander continued to lick Kayven's ears, and took deep breaths to try calm his friend. The paw on the stripey Knofleri's back shifted slightly so that more of Xander's front leg covered it as he leaned into him in a sort of hug.
"Don't worry about it, it's fine," he said reassuringly, he had actually been surprised and worried by his friend's reaction, "We'll just have to work on making you less afraid of things, so you can be the one doing the scaring. Okay?"

"...Okay," Kayven said, his voice squeaking. He leaned into Xander's embrace, returning the hug. He wasn't quite sure why he had freaked out so badly. Maybe something had happened to him when he was young, something he couldn't seem to remember...
Slowly, his breathing eased down so it matched with his friend's.
"I...I'm alright, now," he said, getting control over himself, "I'm fine."

Giving the grey ears one last lick, Xander took a step back and sat down, observing his friend closely.
"You sure?" he asked, uncertain but patient. He wanted to help, but he really didn't know what to do here.

Kayven nodded.
"I'm sure," he said, "G-Go ahead and do your intimating stance again. I need to get use to it so I can fight back if I need to and...as long as I remember you won't hurt me I shouldn't cower..."
He took a deep breath.
"Okay, come at me," he said, looking directly into Xander's eyes.

Xander regarded Kayven for a moment longer, then nodded and stood up, his tail swishing out behind him.
Slowly, he arched his back and half-crouched, his fur bristling and his tail lashing at the air. He could easily look twice his size like this. His mouth was open, fangs showing but not quite a snarl, he was dialing it down a bit for the grey Knopfleri's sake. His claws dug into the ground as he held Kayven's gaze.

Kayven's eyes narrowed in apprehension but he held his ground and looked back at Xander. His tail swished behind him, anxious but not afraid. He dug his claws in so he wouldn't run.
Quietly, he began to growl back.

Xander smirked slightly, showing more teeth, his tail poised scorpion-like as he slowly started to lean forward, looking bigger and as though he might pounce.
His eyes were bright with confidence as he stared calmly at Kayven.

Kayven saw Xander leaning and forced himself not to cower. He growled a little louder, showing his teeth as his own back arched.
"I'm not afraid," he said, trying to convince himself of this fact, "I w-won't run!"
He snarled.

Tail lashing whip-like before curling back into it's scorpion pose, Xander grinned a confident and unfriendly grin, more a display of sharp fangs than a true smile. His eyes narrowed with an almost hungry fierceness, and a low growl started in the back of his throat.
The brown and green male was still merely testing Kayven, trying to prepare him for what he might one day run into. He was still in control of his instincts, and despite appearances, his stripey friend was in no danger what-so-ever.
